Hey!
Here Come the Pixies!
They’re Gigantic, bringing a musical Wave of Mutilation across the nation, and they’re literally All We Think About Now. Got to make sure to get those tickets in the bag, circle the calendar, and then count the hours until they hit the stage at the historic Hollywood Palladium… but… We’re So Impatient! With its 4,000 capacity, of which most are general admission standing areas and limited reserved seats on the balcony, it’s going to be a rockin’ great time!
What could ever be more exciting than the most influential band of the late 80s alt rock movement live in concert? Okay, maybe the fact that they’re not only jamming one night, but two.
So, on the first night - ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe le Monde’ front to back. ‘Bossanova’ was famously written on the go - while the Pixies were in the studio busy recording the album. It spawned massively successful hits such as ‘Velouria’ and ‘Dig For Fire’, topping charts in the United Kingdom like mad. ‘Trompe le Monde’ dropped in 1991, becoming the final album before the band broke up.
And then the second night - classic Pixies. Everything you love, some rarities from their deep catalogue, and to top it all - some new bangers from the new album, ‘The Night The Zombies Came’, that dropped recently.
It’s full throttle for the Pixies, and they’re sounding just as fresh as they did when they hit the scene in 1987 with their mini-LP, ‘Come on Pilgrim’ and the subsequent full length debut album, ‘Surfer Rosa’. Black Francis is still the driving force with his raw, caustic, and gravelly voice, with lead-guitarist Joey Santiago throwing sharp and smooth, dirty and clean, light and shade, thick and thin as always. David Lovering’s drumming is ever so rock solid, while Emma Richardson recently joined the band as bassist, and absolutely nailing it. The fact is, the Pixies are here to make music, and they mean business.
Kurt Vile and The Violators make for a perfect special guest. With bangers such as ‘Pretty Pimpin’ and ‘Like Exploding Stones’, the rockers are bound to get the crowd going.
The Pixies are antagonistic, contradictory, unsettling, brilliant. So get your tickets and go see them. Put it on a T-shirt and wear it - people will be jealous. If not, we’d have to ask - where is your mind?
